Tonights Chamber of Commerce Meeting

February 9th 2009 @ the Burgundy Room Bonnie Castle Manor.  This was my second and thank god my last.  I did not want to go to the first one but I felt it was for a very worthy cause.

CLICK HERE and select save for tonights audio!

The meeting starts out normally and then it becomes focused on Moi.  Move your sliders to 3:59 and you can hear all about it.  I guess there were a few members of the executive board that did not know what I was doing with the camera and the audio recorder.  Some claim that if they had known that I was recording the meeting then they surely would have objected.  Well I will admit that my digital camera was very cleverly disguised as a DIGITAL CAMERA.  What did you think I was doing?  I am sure I will have more to say later........till then, Sleep Tight Commrades

FYI
I did do a little sleuthing around at BCM.  I really never did believe that the yelling I heard came from the Kitchen or anywhere else.  It could have only come from one place and that is the Burgundy Room.

Jim, you should know they can't legally prevent you from recording.

Hope I do not lose the 70 and over crowd with that last comment

So you're taking back your earlier statement that You "refuse to be arrogant and ignore them." referring to the yelling? Basically you are saying JR, Critter, and the unnamed member are straight out lying, or are you just being arrogant? I'm curious.

During the last meeting you taped, the President of the chamber spoke of doing business publicly, in accordance with the "Sunshine Laws" relative to "Executive Sessions"
I guess he was just performing for the camera, eh?
I'm surprised he didn't throw out the WDT reporter, too. Seems they were all a lot more polite with him there....

Interested:
At the time I made that post I was willing to listen to those three because there was a chance that I was wrong. But like I said I did some sleuthing of the building layout. So I am going to yield to what I heard....

I would love to know what a lawyers take on the Open Meetings Law would be. The Chamber is publicly listed under charities. The Chamber is largely funded by public money from the village and town and bed tax funds from the county. As a taxpayer that supports this entity through taxes, I would like to see full video of the Chamber meetings so as to be better informed of their actions. Especially in light of the talk about the money that was unaccounted for from an event that required the involvement of the village police department. I heard that there is money unaccounted for again this year as well. We need to see the discussion on these matters. It'd be good to have the meetings available for those who can not attend the meetings due to other conflicts.

It also occurs to me from seeing copies of meeting minutes that the Chamber would be better served to focus on the loss of memberships in the last few years. Some have left the Chamber have walked away with bitter feelings because of actions taken by the Chamber, individual board members or prior staff members.

Why do we always make such issues out of things in Alex Bay? We all know that controversy and bad PR sells news, but we are a tourist town trying to bring new businesses, new residents, and new tourists here and boost our economy. Alex Mosher and BJ have been an important part of Pirates Weeks for many years and it has been an important and fun event. If something has gone on, take care of it, and move past it. Change can be good. New ideas, new blood, and new fun. Make the passing a friendly exchange and reward the Mosher's for a job well done. If the COC members vote to make changes, that is their business. Obviously we do not know the whole story and in fairness to everyone, it's probably none of our business. Fix what ever is wrong and go forward.

As many of you know my husband and I tried to promote positiveness through a new blog called "PositivelyAlexBay." Our site was sabotaged and destroyed by someone. Fortunately, it is illegal to destroy someone's site and it is being investigated. I find it very hard to believe that the "Iranian Underground" chose to destroy only our site which promoted goodness and history in our community. The authorities wholeheartedly agree with us and believe it was local sabotage.

I totally agree with whomever the voice was that said we have to stop promoting Alexandria Bay as a beer drinking party town. With the change in the economy, families are looking for wholesome family fun. Why not capitalize on this and create something new and fun for families or senior citizens. Let's see what we can do about all those empty buildings downtown and make them into something unusual and fun.

Jim, I don't know you very well, but as a family man living in our community, I would think that maybe you could put your God given talents to better use and promote goodness and unity in our community rather than constantly reporting only controversy. You would make an excellent investigative reporter for one of the larger newspapers doing an expose' on big city dirt, but this is little ole' Alex Bay--let's promote the good things on the air and keep the dirty laundry within the family. Gossiping, and talking crap is fun, we all have been guilty of it, but there comes a time when we need to stop and take a look at what we are doing, and make the changes that best promote our Community, making it a fun place to visit, to live and a place that our children will want to come back to.

Just my own opinion...

All monies from all of last years events were accounted for...this is how rumors get started when false information is given.

I support Jen Side and her post. I agree with all that she said. We have a beautiful area and we need to promote it in a positive way...not look for something to be wrong.

Thanks to Crabby for this suggestion:

The for sale sign is going up tomorrow.... I am out of here

One last thought before I close down this blog and move on my merry way:
A partial quote from Orwell's Novel 1984

".....IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."

With 18? directors I am sure all monies are accounted for or we would hear about it. Looking back the chamber has had dishonest/thievery of some sort a few times in the last 20 yrs. It's nice to see there is so much interest and attention now that no one would dare.

Anon 3;33 - There were alot of people in that room not just one that didn't appreciate the naration/video/audio published to all our neighbors/world about this small town chamber and its discussions. It's not like we are getting paid, obviously we are all there to promote our business's, and we are sure not there liking the videoing of our every move.
Let's put this energy to better use!

X-Chamber Director- which one are you?
Chamber Diretor- and who would you be?

I think if you want to know what was going on at the C.C meeting you could go into the C.C and ask to see or hear the meeting that was recorded at the meeting. No one needs a personal copy of the meeting to do with it as they please to. As was said the C.C meetings are opened to the public so why not attend?, if you are that interested in it.

Anonymous said...

You're right J.C. "Ignorance is strength" applies here. If you knew the background to the board voting on Alex's possible banishment you would understand why they did it. They had good reasons behind it. It wasn't just out of the blue. But they were professional enough to keep that information private and not air the dirty laundry in front of everyone. I can see some people saying that they want to know the reasons. I don't think Alex would like it discussed in public. Too many people will side with the board.

Considering the Facts,
I am aware of the facts as they have been told to me by various "people".

Anonymous said...

I would like to question the potential "pool" of "people" that have "told" you what the Chamber is all about. Since you stated that you had attended your second and last meeting it should be pointed out that your narration of event is a bit biased. The Chamber has been an integral part of our local economy since it's inception. The logistics of creating, funding and implementing events and tourism is a lot of work. Might you consider volunteering as everyone on the Board of Directors does? Now that means giving up family, business and personal time...if your not part of the solution, then your part of the problem.

Okey Dokey Anonymous 8:27pm.....
I have over the years volunteered for many chamber sponsored events. Always enjoyed myself. Lots of volunteers out there that never go to any of the meetings. I am not soured by the C of C or what they do...... just their meetings and how they handle personality issues in executive session.

Maybe some consideration for the Board trying to get through another situation with the Moshers might be an idea. If the Board wanted to show how much we have had to spend in $ and time to appease these individuals we would be attacking them, individually. Instead we try to move ahead, in a professional manner.

I guess she and he told you Jimmy, Do you now get the point? You've always said your motto is to annoy and iritate. Well looks like you're being successful. You must be happy!
