Abay Water Rates & Redwood

The following link is to the article in today's WDT. I did not think the Town of Abay or the Village of Redwood would just accept the rate change as the Mayor stated at the last VB meeting. The water that the mayor swam in and drank courtesy of Pirate Bill Johnston was just a harbinger of things to come.

Water Rate Debate

The owning of the water is the key reason for the town government to push for the disolving of the village government.

Here is a question for everyone. Does every business and property in the village have the new meter that calculates every drop? I have heard that some do and others do not. I also believe if the new meters were intalled for everyone that usage would be correctly measured and everyone would pay there fair share. Meaning some with the old meters would stop getting those with new ones to pay for their water.

I do not know if it is true or not that some have new meters and some special people do not but maybe someone else does.

Im not in the hamlet of Redwood, but i am connected to the water line going there. Now I am paying for water that i used to get from my well, which i DONT have access to anymore. I was told that when the line went through, I would still have access to my well. Now the village is going to keep raising the cost of water just to keep them making money over what it cost to put the line in. I guess I am going to have to dig it back up myself just to hook back up to my well, cause Im not gonna keep paying more each year.

Another rant about this water line is the billing. I have heard reports from some Redwood residents about bills that are outragous to say the least. One person i know was billed for 55,000 gallons used in three months, how can you use that much? I also heard the post office used 2,000,000 gallons, imagine that. The reply the person got from asking how they used 55,000 gallons was...meters working right, pay the bill, investigation done. Come on!!!

Anon. Said asked this question "Does every business and property in the village have the new meter that calculates every drop? I have heard that some do and others do not". When you mention village are you referring to Abay? If you are, I have had a new meter for several years. I hope everyone does. I wonder if we need to hire a water Meter Maid?

The village quoted the town a rate of 2.61/1000 about 4 years ago
With esculating costs everywhere the new rate is about $1.20 more per thousand, that equates to about $4.80 more per three month billing period (using an average consumption per user of 4000 gallons/3 mths), or an increase of $19.20 per year;
It doesn't sound that bad!!

Ok $19.20 more per year, thats fine if you were only getting billed for 4000 gallons. I believe that the first two bills I got were estimated, total usage..6000 gallons. The last bill I got said metered..21000 gallons. I gave up washing the vehicles, only watering flowers half what i used to water them, and trying to cut down on any water usage beyond necessity. I dont think that I was paying this much to NG to run my pump out of my own well!!! Sure , you say its only $19.20 per year if you only use an average of 4000 gallons, what about the post office who got the bill for 2,000,000 gallons, thats like a bill for almost $4000!! Its not right , how can two people in that office use that much? This matter has to be looked at more closely to find out how us people are getting ripped off.
