Parking Meters

I could not believe what I saw today!  I have always known that the meters were free on Sunday's.  But I never knew that the meters were active on american holidays.  The 2 most prominent holidays that I am concerned about are 4th of July and Labor day.  The 4th is a give away since the Village shuts down all of the meters on Church St and makes them No parking- tow away zones for the evening fire works.  At the last VB meeting the board voted unanimously to extend the monitoring of the meters till Sept 15th which is a 2 week extension.  Since we have this extension, the Village could certainly over look the Monday Labor day holiday and give the meters and the staff that patrol them the whole day off.
If you click on the picture of the meter it will zoom to a larger image, you will notice that the days for meter exception are Sundays and Holidays.  Holidays has been scratched off with a sharpie marker.  How about this........ Parking enforced with the exception of Sundays and all Holidays.............both American and Canadian Holidays..... Instead of calling it Holidays it could be called Tourist Appreciation Days.

We went to the Craft show this a.m. and didn't put money in the meter because we thought holidays were excluded. As we drove up Church Street we saw that the parking meter man was on patrol. Somehow we must have not read something right or just plain thought wrong.

Another beef was that most of the signs, with the exception of the one placed in the meridian, said that the craft fair was Sat. and Sun. This morning we noticed that the one placed in the meridian had Mon. on it as well. It would've been nice for the vendors had the signs been correct. I know that one vendor was not happy at all. Some of them came from a long ways away. With the price of gas, I am sure it would've been nice if today would've been worth it too.

Sorry didn't mean to take away from the parking meter post.

PUT THE HOLIDAYS BACK ON THE METERED PARKING EXCEPTIONS YOU CHEAPSKATES! It's only two days.
Blame the Craft Fair signs on the Chamber of Commerce Craft Fair Committee Chair. It's her job to see it's done right. That would be Sally Crews. Give credit where credit is due....

Good old pot stirring cur,

Never enough spare time of his own to help contribute to local events but lots of time to spend on his computer calling dedicated residents (board members) names and who to blame when an oversight occurs.... Heaven forbid you point out the missing Monday sign in time for it to be corrected.... No, that would be a constructive contribution on your part and is just not in your DNA...

Maybe they need more money to s----.from the meters

How about how the meters don't take dimes and nickles ? How stupid is that.. they would make more too because you get less time for your money with the lesser coins so why not take them ?

It takes only one bad expierence to drive away tourism and with the travel expenses I believe the decision makers for the village be thankful to have the village full and parking spots at a premium. The alternatives hurts everyone , what can be the revenue for 2days of amnesty .If there are 30 tickets written @$25.00, do the math($750.00) Whats a night @the Riveredge,Dinner out and Misc momentos to go home. Maybe $500-750. per couple or car? As a seasonal resident I truly treasure the quaintness and quality of the life we enjoy for 6mos and want to continue to enjoy the fun and relaxation now and for many years to come with our children and grand children, sometimes there has to business decisions made despite the short term financial loss that is relized. Sincerely
River Lover

I also noticed that the Meter man was out on Monday. I parked in front of Jrecks for lunch and got a courtesy ticket b.c I didnt pay the meter. Hello it is a holiday. The Bay must really need money.

To anon (sounds like KG again).. The Chamber of Commerce is a corporation, not a local collection of do-gooders. It's time you learn to do it right. You have a paid executive. That is the person whose feet you hold to the fire when things go wrong, not mine.
Besides, I never noticed the sign, that would be "Crabby."
Try talking to her like you do to me....cur

Yup, it was me. I didn't notice it until Monday though. The sign at the end of Walton Street said Sat. & Sun. so on Sunday I thought "crap I missed it."

On Monday as we headed to North Star for breakfast the sign in the median said Sat., Sun & Mon. (which was added in white on the bottom of the sign), so we decided to visit after breakfast.

I said to one of the crafters that I almost didn't make it because I thought it ended on Sun. and they said that they (the crafters) weren't too happy about the sign issue. Some of them had come from far away (NC, PA) to name a few and things were rather slow. I do have to add that they did have some very nice items though and I do think the COC did a good job in getting some different items here this time. It's just too bad that some of the signs were wrong.

SO, on another note...do the meter say that you don't have to pay on Holidays or not? Now I'm confused.

On another note.......The meters say Monday through Saturday. Except Sundays and Holidays, but Holidays has been crossed out with a marker

curmudgeon said...

....so, they USED to include holidays and now they don't? Or did they buy the digital meters used, from a place that honored holidays same as Sundays.
How about a motion at the next VB meeting?

The Big Yellow Sticker Says:

"Meters Enforced
Mon-Sat 10 AM - 6 PM
HOLIDAYS INCLUDED"

What more do you want?. Not clear???? Give me a break!

You have to look hard for the other wording on the inside of the meter head that has been blacked out with the sharpie.

The debate as to meters on holidays is a valid one and is appropriate for the public participation portion of Village Board meetings.

Cur, go to the Village Offices and read the minutes from the 1940's when the parking issue was first addressed. At the time, the problem was employees and business owners parking on the street. Nothing has changed in 60+ years. IE; Alex and his favorite parking spot. And no I'm not KG....

I spoke with Trustee Drake about this issue the same day I took the picture and posted the topic. He asked me to email the picture to him, which I did. If it is not an agenda item at the next VB meeting, then it will be a public concern.

Regarding the subject of Parking Meters. I think it would go a long way in improving the look of downtown by eliminating the parking meters ( GASP !!!?!?!?) entirely . Instead the village should use centralized parking pay stations ( Google this term if you are not familiar) This system utilizes a " vending machine" of sorts that produces a slip with the alloted time on it based on how much money you feed it. You then take the slip and affix it to the dash of your car. Near the pay station would be a DOT type road sign that would clearly define the parking regulations . This system is already in use in Syracuse. Again imagine the street look without the archaic unsightly meters......

The problem will always be employee/business owner parking. That is an ENFORCEMENT issue. We're talking ordinance change, and "be nice to the tourists" here. We understand what the stickers say, we're looking for change.
No, you're not KG...he NEVER would have mentioned parking on the street in a no parking zone...

i swear some people would not know what to do with themselves if they didn't have something to complain about.

For christ sakes its just a quater

We just recently visited Sylvan Beach. They did not having parking meters, but a centralized parking station as Hammonite described. It was very nice not to see the parking meters although you still have to pay for parking.

I do have to say though, I know that the meter money is revenue to the Village. Doing away with them might be detrimental. I do also think that if people did not have to pay for the spaces, employees and business owners may take up all of the spots and there would be nothing left for the tourists. Sorry Cur... We can't bite the hand that feeds us.

Yes meter money is revenue to the village. But there is an expense with that revenue and that is the people monitoring the meters. [Good will can be a revenue too. Lack of it can be an expense.] Cur is not in favor of getting rid of the meters. He and I both want The four big Can/Am holidays to be exempted. Thats it....

"be nice to the tourists"

Alexandria Bay locals and owners are probably the most hostile people I've ever met in a tourist town. They wonder why all the people with lots of money avoid the town like a virus..

Anonymous said...

to anon...where and when exactly, do you observe all this hostility? I'm in the village 12 hours every day, and know most of the "locals and owners" and I gotta tell you, I don't see the hostility.
Can you give an example?
Who are the, people "with lots of money?" Where do they go? Do you mean celebrities or just run-of-the-mill rich folks?
Do you have something to say? Feel free to air you gripe.
I'm going to ask the blogmeister to start a new thread on this topic, see where you want to go with it. I want you to help the hostiles make our village, "The Aspen of the East."
